God’s Sovereignty on the Open Road

As truckers, we spend countless hours on the road, taking routes, dealing with weather changes, and even facing unexpected delays in our deliveries. Life on the road is unpredictable. Routes change all the time,
and you never know when you’ll experience another breakdown. As truckers, we are so aware of challenges and constantly have to adjust to work around or through them. Similarly, life is full of uncertainty. God has His plan, and sometimes we aren’t happy with the journey.

God’s Sovereignty in Every Situation

The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign, meaning He has complete control over all things, both big and small. He weaves everyday circumstances to fit His will and plan for all things.

“The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom
rules over all.”

Psalm 103:19

Knowing that an all-loving, good God is taking care of everything should give us great comfort, even when things don’t go according to our plans and we are faced with suffering. No matter how uncertain or difficult the road may seem, God has us in His thoughts and plans, down to the smallest detail.

Nothing happens outside of God’s sovereign plan. Unexpected delays, long hours on the road—it’s all part of His design. He knows exactly how many miles you will travel all the days of your life. He knows every stop you will take and every challenge you will face. In those moments of struggle, have faith that God is working all things for your good and for His glory (Romans 8:28). Even when we can only see what is right in front of us, we need to trust that God has the bigger picture that we cannot yet understand or see.

The Gospel for the Long Haul

The gospel is undoubtedly the most powerful display of God’s sovereignty. Looking at all the prophecies ever written and how they were fulfilled in Jesus Christ shows us exactly how perfect God’s plan is. Jesus came to earth, lived a completely sinless life, died on the cross for our iniquities, and rose again, giving us the gift of eternal life.

Jesus came to save the lost. He didn’t come for perfect people but for sinners who needed Him. He came to set captives free. In John 3:16, we are reminded that “God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” This promise is for all those who repent of their sins and turn their lives around to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Finding Rest in God’s Plan

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

As you continue your journey, know that God is always with you and has never left your side. When we feel like God is far away, it’s not because He has distanced Himself, but because we have. Jesus invites us to come to Him when we are heavy-laden, and He will give us rest.

When we suffer because things aren’t going our way, we need to submit our plans to God and trust in what He has for us. There is a quote from Charles Spurgeon that helped me understand this verse more deeply:

“The sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which the child of God rests his
head at night, giving perfect peace.”

Charles Spurgeon

Like a child with no worries, we need to rest our heads on our pillows, knowing that our almighty Father in Heaven has everything in His hands. Your journey on the road might seem long, but with Christ as your Savior, you will never travel alone. So, turn away from a life of sin and uncertainty, and put your trust in Jesus, who is the beginning and the end of all things.
